A chocolate beer glass. Sounds like something invented by Charlie and the Chocolate Factory author Roald Dahl, right? While it may seem as fictional as Willy Wonka, Japanese brewery Sankt Gallen has produced the first entirely chocolate beer mug in a limited edition batch.
The benefit of pairing a chocolate beer glass with your favorite beverages from Michigan breweries, including Frankenmuth Brewery, goes beyond the edible cup. The deliciously sweet chocolate glass can counteract the bitterness that accompanies certain brews and, additionally, enrich the complex flavors of others.
Pairing chocolate with beer is nothing new. Since cacao beans were first brought back to Europe in 1585, they were utilized as inspiration for creating new types of beers. Using darker malts, brewers were able to recreate chocolate flavors in their new beers.
While Sankt Gallen’s chocolate beer glass might not have hit the United States just yet, you can still have fun pairing chocolate with brews. Two beers from our brewery that team extremely well with the dark stuff are the Hefeweizen Ale and Munich Style Dunkel Lager. Our Hefewezien brew is a wheat ale that has natural flavor notes that hint at a banana taste. Can you say “chocolate covered bananas?” As for the Munich Dunkel, the malts of this Michigan beer will transform your beer and chocolate experience.
Drinking craft beer from our Michigan brewery is all about finding flavors that work well together to please your palette. Head to your local grocery store, pick up some different kinds of chocolate and try pairing them with our aforementioned seasonal beers to find your favorite combination. You never know what new flavor combination you’ll unleash on your tastebuds with some good old fashioned beer and chocolate.
